BRASKEM green plastic project BRAZIL

SÃO PAULO, 23 de abril de 2009 - On Wednesday Brazilian petrochemical company Braskem laid the cornerstone of the Projeto de Polietileno Verde (Green Polyethylene Project) at the Triunfo Petrochemical Complex (Rio Grande do Sul). The plant will be the first in the world to use sugar cane ethanol to make 100% renewable ethane and polyethylene on a commercial scale.

The total investment will be R$500 million and the plant will make 200,000 tons/year of ethane, that will be converted into the same amount of polyethylene at existing plants at the Triunfo complex. The plant's operations are scheduled to start in the final quarter of 2010 and the sales in 2011.

The Green Polyethylene Project will consume some 470 million liters of ethanol/ year, which will initially be brought by ship from other regions in the country to the Santa Clara terminal, in Triunfo, and then transported via pipeline to the plant. The project is part of a R$1 billion investment plan launched by Braskem in Rio Grande do Sul for the next three years.
